A useful fit for

For a space whose need fits a 24.79-pint/day Appendix X1 rating, where the owner values ENERGY STAR Most Efficient status, three documented modes and tank or lower gravity drainage.

The main tradeoff

The 80-pint headline is a 95°F/90% RH maximum. The exact EPA record is below a strict 25-pint threshold; it has no lift pump or app connection, and the manual does not set a numerical hose reach or prove bucketless use.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does the exact TDW80A meet 20 pints/day but fail a strict 25-pint/day minimum?

Yes at 20; no at 25. ENERGY STAR Appendix X1 lists 24.79 pints/day, not the 80-pint 95°F/90% RH maximum.

Explore this need in the finder →
Can the TDW80A use a downhill hose or pump water uphill?

The exact manual documents a downward-sloping gravity hose to a nearby drain or bucket. No built-in pump is documented, so pump lift does not match.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does the exact ENERGY STAR record support certification while app control remains unsupported?

The official exact-model row confirms ENERGY STAR and Most Efficient status, but says Connected Capable: No. Essential app control does not match.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does its exact manual document a temperature-responsive Smart mode?

Yes. Smart mode automatically sets the humidity target based on room temperature. It is local operation, not a connected/app feature.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does the gravity hose establish bucketless use?

No. The manual documents both the fitted tank and hose route but does not say the tank can be removed during operation. Unknown bucketless behavior cannot pass an essential need.

Does its exact IEF clear 1.88 but not 1.90 L/kWh?

The ENERGY STAR row lists 1.88 L/kWh, while the manual table gives 1.85. Use the exact federal record for the standardized 1.88 test; neither figure clears 1.90.

The Waykar TDW80A is advertised as an 80-pint dehumidifier, but that maximum is measured at 95°F and 90% relative humidity. The exact ENERGY STAR record reports 24.79 pints per day under Appendix X1; Waykar’s manual separately lists 24.5 pints at 65°F/60% RH. It is therefore a useful roughly 25-pint standardized option, not an 80-pint expectation for an ordinary basement.

This review uses Waykar’s exact TDW80A U.S. product page, its TDW80A owner manual, and the exact ENERGY STAR model record. The page and manual identify TDW80A, and the federal record lists that same model number and the U.S. market.

What the 80-pint label means

The standardized ENERGY STAR row lists 24.79 pints/day, an integrated energy factor of 1.88 L/kWh, 285 kWh/year and Most Efficient status for this exact model. Its owner manual lists 24.5 pints/day at 65°F/60% RH, 36 at 80°F/60%, 56 at 86°F/80%, and 80 at 95°F/90%. Those separate conditions explain why the headline is much higher than the Appendix X1 figure. In the finder, a 20-pint minimum fits; a strict 25-pint minimum does not. Do not round 24.79 up or substitute the hot-room maximum.

The ENERGY STAR record gives a comparable efficiency figure, but neither it nor the manufacturer’s area claim predicts your electric bill or proves that one appliance can dry every connected room. Doorways, moisture sources, temperature and air movement still matter. Use the listed rating to screen capacity, then size the unit for the actual damp area.

Three modes and a display you can dim

The manual names Sleep, Smart and Turbo modes. Sleep uses low fan speed and turns the ambient light off; Turbo uses high fan speed for continuous operation; Smart uses medium fan speed and adjusts its target to room temperature. I count the two fixed low/high choices as manual fan speeds rather than counting the automatic Smart mode as a third fixed setting. The color-changing light indicates humidity bands and operating state, and the control can switch the light off or dim the display. That may help if the unit sits near a bedroom, but it is not an app or remote-control feature.

The model also has an adjustable humidity target, auto defrost, a child lock, a filter reminder and power-off memory. Its timer is a one-time setting: the manual says the automatic-on timer is not available, and an interrupted timer must be reset. ENERGY STAR lists Connected Capable: No, so do not choose it when app operation is an essential requirement. It uses 120 V/60 Hz, with 380 W listed at 65°F/60% RH, and the manual recommends operation from 41°F to 95°F.

Tank or downhill hose, but not an uphill pump

The fitted tank holds 1.58 gallons. A full-tank alert stops the compressor, after which the tank must be emptied and reinstalled. The manual also documents continuous drainage: attach the included hose at the side drain port, send it to a nearby floor drain or bucket, and keep it sloping downward without kinks. The page title mentions garden-hose compatibility, but the manual’s diagram is the stronger guide to installation; confirm the actual fitting and route before planning a permanent connection.

No built-in lift pump or pump-height rating appears in the exact model record or manual. A lower drain can work by gravity; an outlet above the unit is not supported. The instructions do not establish bucketless operation with the tank removed, and they do not give a verified hose length or minimum drop. Check reach at the installation site and keep the tank available unless Waykar confirms otherwise. A larger number on the cabinet does not change the water route.

Who gets the most from it?

Shortlist the TDW80A if your capacity requirement is at or below 24.79 standardized pints/day, ENERGY STAR certification and Most Efficient status matter, and a tank or downhill hose suits the room. Its three named modes, humidity indicator and dim/off light are more meaningful differentiators than its warm-room maximum. A 20-pint threshold is supported by the exact rating; 25 pints, pump lift, app control, or confirmed tank-free operation are not.

Choose another configuration if the drain must climb, if app control is mandatory, or if the room regularly sits outside the documented 41–95°F range. For a higher standardized minimum, compare a Waykar 120- or 150-pint model only by that model’s own ENERGY STAR record, manual and included drain equipment. The 80-pint label is not a reason to skip that comparison. The finder should include the TDW80A for a 20-pint need and exclude it for a 25-pint or uphill-pump requirement; unknown connectivity and bucketless operation must not be credited as features.
