Model comparison

Danby 30-pint dehumidifiers: Smart mode or compact conventional controls?

Danby’s current U.S. category lists two distinct 30-pint configurations: DDR030EBWDB and DDR030BLWDB-ME. Their capacities are similar, but one page/manual pair documents Smart Dehumidify and one does not. Their cabinet widths, airflow clearances and included drain fittings also differ. This comparison is about those exact configurations, not every Danby with “030” in its model number.

First decide whether Smart mode is useful

The exact DDR030BLWDB-ME owner manual explains that Smart Dehumidify adjusts its humidity behavior with fluctuating room temperature and stabilizes between about 45% and 55% relative humidity. The target cannot be changed while Smart is active. If you want to pick your own set point, the same manual documents a 35–85% range in five-point steps; the humidity-adjust buttons cancel Smart. The model also offers normal and high fan settings.

DDR030EBWDB instead has exact-page and exact-cover-manual evidence for electronic set-point controls, two fan speeds, continuous operation, a timer and restart/defrost functions. Its manual gives a 35–80% humidity range in five-point increments. That exact page/manual do not document temperature-responsive Smart Dehumidify, so do not transfer the ME model’s feature just because both SKUs begin DDR030. If Smart is essential, the evidence currently supports the ME configuration; if it is not, the EBWDB has a simpler control story and may fit a narrow footprint better.

Measure the cabinet before comparing rooms

Both exact U.S. pages label the machines 30 pints per day and advertise coverage up to 2,000 square feet. The EBWDB page pairs 30 pints with 14.6 liters; the ME page gives 14.2 liters, which is the closer conversion for 30 U.S. pints. Keep the manufacturer’s pint label as the capacity class and treat both area figures as broad claims, not guaranteed extraction rates. The exact page for each says ENERGY STAR certified, but the manufacturer material reviewed here does not establish a numerical IEF for either model.

DDR030EBWDB is 13.19 inches wide, 9.65 deep and 19.88 high, at 33.1 pounds. DDR030BLWDB-ME is 15.43 inches wide, 11.14 deep and 19.80 high, at 33.3 pounds. So the EBWDB is much narrower and shallower, while the ME is a fraction shorter. In a closet or doorway, that difference can matter more than the nearly identical pint label. Plan for air clearance as well: the EBWDB manual says 18 inches on all sides; the ME manual gives 16 inches around air outlets and 8 inches on other sides.

Both drain by gravity and need their bucket

These are not pump models. The manuals describe bucket collection and a separate continuous gravity route, and both require the bucket to remain installed. The hose must run straight downward; bends or a raised section can stop drainage. Neither model documents bucketless use, and neither should be matched to an elevated sink.

The drain-kit detail separates the two. DDR030EBWDB’s exact family manual says the continuous-drain connector and hose are provided; a garden-hose substitute must be cut to no more than six feet. DDR030BLWDB-ME’s 2023 exact-cover manual says the hose and female-threaded end are not provided. It specifies a one-inch-ID female end, a garden hose of at least 5/16-inch ID and a six-foot maximum. The ME manual explicitly says there is no drain pump. If you plan to drain continuously, count the parts and installation effort as part of the choice, and verify that your outlet is lower before buying.

How to choose

  • Pick DDR030BLWDB-ME when Smart Dehumidify is a real preference, you can accept its wider case and are comfortable sourcing the drain-end hardware if you will not use the bucket.
  • Pick DDR030EBWDB when a narrow, shallow footprint is more useful, you want the manual’s conventional 35–80% set-point range, or the supplied drain connector/hose simplifies a lower gravity run.
  • Pick neither if you need a lift pump, bucketless drainage, Wi-Fi/app control or a verified efficiency minimum above the documented fields. For an essential capability, select a configuration whose own page or manual confirms it.

Everyday care matters more than the area headline

Both pages list an automatic de-icer, power-failure restart, a 24-hour timer and washable filter. The DDR030EBWDB manual reminds you to clean around 250 operating hours; the ME manual recommends a roughly two-week cleaning routine, sooner in dusty air or around shedding pets, and also uses an hours-based light. Keep the intake and outlet open and the floor level. The manuals recommend an ambient range starting at 5°C, but the low-temperature feature is not proof of unchanged moisture removal in a chilly room.

Neither product page’s square-foot claim can account for a wet basement, open doors, infiltration or a persistent leak. Fix the moisture source where possible, use the rating as a rough capacity comparison, and choose the water route that you can maintain. If you want exact humidity control, use the standard set-point mode; if you prefer a temperature-responsive band, the model-specific manual is what distinguishes the ME version.

Choose around water, placement and routine.
