Start with the room, then plan the water route
Start with the room
The most useful first question is often not “How many square feet?” It is “Where can the collected water go, and can I maintain the appliance where it will sit?” Start with the route and then compare rated capacity.
1. Decide whether a bucket is workable
Bucket collection avoids permanent drain plumbing but creates a repeat task: check the level, empty the water safely and clean the container periodically. The weight of a dry product does not include a full bucket. If the unit will be in a hard-to-reach location or run while you are away, consider whether frequent bucket checks are acceptable rather than assuming a large tank will solve every situation. Side-access tank access can also affect where the appliance fits.
2. Measure the drain geometry
A gravity hose is useful only when the route falls to a lower receiving point. Check the height of the outlet, slope, hose path and risk of a kink before choosing a permanent spot. A pump can move water upward only within its model-specific limit and with the required configuration. The Midea Cube pump MAD50PS1QWT-A has a 14-foot vertical limit and needs its bucket installed. Smart Access MAD50PS1AWBL’s family manual instead gives a 5-metre maximum rise and distance; its bucket also stays installed. See how to measure gravity and pump routes.
3. Treat daily pints as a rating, not a promise
Published pints per day distinguish capacity classes; they are not a guaranteed daily result in your room. Operating temperature, relative humidity, airflow and continuing water intrusion all change the work. Midea product pages also use room-area claims that are not equivalent to a guaranteed capacity test. Compare the exact pint rating, but do not use square footage alone as a pass/fail constraint.
4. Verify handling, clearance and care
Check product dimensions and dry weight against the doorway, floor area and any lifting constraint. Reserve access to the tank, filter, drain and outlet. Current Cube guidance gives a 41–95°F working range; the Smart Access manual gives 41–90°F. Both ask users to maintain clear airflow and a level installation, and recommend cleaning the air filter every two weeks. A drain hose does not eliminate this upkeep.
5. Match the exact variant
A shared name or photo can cover different hardware. MAD50S1QWT-A has no built-in pump; MAD50PS1QWT-A does. Their official gallery images are byte-identical. Within Smart Access, MAD22S1AWWT and MAD35S1AWWT are no-pump models, while black MAD50PS1AWBL has the pump. Their family manual does not document bucketless running. Confirm the full suffix and compare the Cube with the Smart Access family before deciding. If the moisture source is a leak, seepage or wet building material, fix that cause rather than expecting a household appliance to repair it.
Use the finder after you know which water routes are feasible.
