Drainage

Gravity drain or built-in pump?

Installation planning

Choose by the direction water must travel. Gravity needs a lower outlet and a continuously falling hose route. A pump can lift condensate, but only within its model’s manual limit and while configured as instructed.

Gravity is simplest when the geometry works

A gravity hose does not create suction or lift. The appliance outlet needs to sit above the drain, and the hose must retain a downhill fall without a kink, sag that traps water or upward loop. Identify the final discharge location before placing the dehumidifier. Make sure water will not spill onto electrical equipment or finished surfaces.

Tank requirements differ by model. The current Midea Cube guide documents bucket collection, continuous gravity drainage and a separate bucketless-gravity plan. In contrast, the Smart Access manual describes tank collection and a continuous gravity drain, but its shutoff instructions say the machine stops if the tank is removed or misplaced; it does not document tank-free operation. Do not treat two gravity hoses as identical if one system needs its tank installed.

Measure pump rise and check the exact manual

Several Midea models have upward pump routes, but their manuals and model numbers must stay distinct. The 2024 Cube manual lists no-suffix MAD50PS1QWT and MAD50PS1QWT-B in its pump instructions and gives a 14-foot maximum rise; the separate MAD50PS1QWT-A guide gives the same limit. All require the bucket installed. The 50-pint QGR model shares that manual family but its exact product page says it is no longer available, so retain it only for existing-owner reference. The Smart Access MAD50PS1AWBL manual gives a maximum rise and distance of 5 metres (about 16.4 feet) and requires its tank installed. That limit applies to both rise and distance; it is not unlimited horizontal hose reach.

Measure vertical rise from the appliance’s pump discharge to the receiving point; measure the hose route separately. Keep the manufacturer’s hose and connector secure, use the pump button where the Smart Access instructions require it, and verify that water discharges at the intended location. An incorrectly seated connection can leak or fail to drain. Midea’s 50-pint pump guides also describe maintenance for the pump filter; do not treat the pump as maintenance-free.

Bucket checks are still part of some plans

For collection-only use, check how you will remove and empty the tank. A Smart Access side-access tank pulls out from the side and uses a splash-guard lid; leave enough clearance to withdraw it. The Cube has a different bucket and nested-storage arrangement. Dry product weight also excludes the collected water. Never move a dehumidifier with water in its tank where the manual warns of tipping or spills.

A pump may avoid carrying water to a high sink, but it does not mean the unit can run with no tank. The Cube guide prohibits pump operation in its bucketless configuration, and the Smart Access guide says the tank must remain in place. A separate gravity plan may be possible on a pump-equipped model, but it still has to fit the hose, tank and manual instructions.

Consider the receiving point and surroundings

Plan the electrical outlet and water route together. Use a sturdy, level floor, maintain the specified airflow clearance and direct discharge where a leak will not damage floors or electrical equipment. If an outdoor route might freeze, consult the exact manual; frozen water can obstruct or damage a drain path. Do not improvise with an unapproved extension or an unsuitable shared outlet.

Quick decision check

  • A lower floor drain and a safe continuous fall are available: compare the model’s documented gravity plan.
  • No suitable drain exists and someone can empty water regularly: use the installed collection tank.
  • The only viable outlet is above the appliance: select a pump-equipped exact model and measure its rise and hose distance.
  • You require bucketless operation: the reviewed Cube guide documents that only for its separate gravity setup; the Smart Access manual does not establish it.
  • The route exceeds the exact pump limit or the manual is unclear for your installation: do not count it as a confirmed match.
