AprilAire E050 Compact Whole-Home Dehumidifier review

A fixed, low-profile 50-pint-class dehumidifier for a planned crawl-space, small-basement or ducted installation. It has no collection tank or built-in pump; plan a continuous drain to a lower outlet. The exact model sheet lists 50/42/35 pints/day at 80/73/65°F and 60% RH.

AprilAire E050 is a fixed, compact 50-pint-class unit, not a portable bucket model. Its exact sheet lists 50/42/35 ppd at 80/73/65°F and 60% RH; product needs a planned lower drain. Built-in pump is not confirmed; separate Model 4856 is an external accessory. Its standard configuration does not advertise Wi-Fi. Current exact EPA certification/IEF remain unknown.

A useful fit for

For a smaller or hard-to-reach residential space where the installer can provide the compact fixed unit with a gravity drain to a lower outlet; the standard model has local digital control but does not advertise Wi-Fi/app control.

The main tradeoff

At 46 lb, it still needs fixed service access, power and drainage. The optional 8-inch collars and separate Model 4856 pump are not built in or included; the exact current EPA result and warranty duration need confirmation.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

What does the E050 50-pint headline mean at different temperatures?

The E050 Form 1008 sheet lists 50 pints/day at 80°F/60% RH, 42 at 73°F/60% RH and 35 at 65°F/60% RH; its rated capacity is at zero external static pressure. Use the test point, not the headline alone, when asking an installer about a cooler or ducted space.

Can E050 run continuously without a tank if a lower drain is available?

Yes. Its exact manual shows a continuous drain to a lower floor drain, waste drain or a separately selected pump. With a lower outlet, use the gravity plan: the line must maintain a downward slope and the drain must stay clear.

Does the standard E050 model have Wi-Fi or an app?

The exact non-W product page describes its onboard digital control and does not advertise Wi-Fi/app control; the separately named E050W is the connected version. If app control is essential, select the W suffix or another exact model whose documentation confirms it.

Can E050 lift water uphill with a built-in pump?

No built-in pump is included. The E050 manual describes the separate Model 4856 external condensate pump and gives it a 22-foot lift; that accessory is a different installation decision, not an E050 built-in pump.

The AprilAire E050 is a compact, fixed-install 50-pint dehumidifier for a crawl space, small basement, attic or a carefully planned ducted zone. It is not a wheeled room appliance: you need a location, an air path and a continuous way to dispose of water before its low-profile cabinet becomes useful.

This assessment uses AprilAire’s exact U.S. E050 page, the manufacturer-authored specification sheet, Form 1008, its installation and owner manual, Form 10017311, and an exact E050 query of EPA’s active dehumidifier dataset.

The exact E050 manufacturer page links the pictured white low-profile cabinet. I inspected the original image: it shows the end filter grille, side-mounted digital control and threaded drain area, but it is not a capacity or installation measurement. AprilAire does not identify whether this product image is a photograph or a rendering.

A small cabinet for a permanent moisture-control job

AprilAire markets the E050 for crawl spaces, attics, garages and basements up to 1,600 square feet, but that is application guidance rather than a guarantee for a divided basement, leaky crawl space, restricted duct or cold installation. At 46 pounds, this stationary unit has a built-in digital control, power cord and drain connection—not a roll-away room appliance.

The cabinet is especially interesting when height and length are constrained. Form 1008 gives 10 inches wide, 10 inches high and 25 inches long; the manufacturer notes that height excludes adjustable feet and the width excludes the user interface. The current product page separately calls out actual measurements of 9.86 by 9.71 by 25 inches. Those are not reasons to skip a clearance check: reserve space for leveling feet, filter access, the drain fitting, service panel and any duct collar. The 8-inch inlet and outlet collars are optional, not in the standard box. AprilAire lists a separate kit for those who need to duct the unit rather than use its open-air circulation arrangement.

“50 pints” depends on the air and duct resistance

The exact specification sheet lists 50 pints per day at 80°F and 60% relative humidity, 42 at 73°F/60% RH and 35 at 65°F/60% RH. Its footnote ties the rated capacity, energy factor and current draw to 80°F/60% RH inlet air at zero external static pressure. Airflow is listed as 145, 125 and 105 CFM at zero, 0.2 and 0.4 inches water column of external static pressure. That is a useful planning envelope: a cooler space and a loaded duct system are not the same test point as the headline number.

Form 1008 also lists manufacturer energy-factor values of 2.0, 1.8 and 1.7 liters per kilowatt-hour at those respective temperature conditions. Those are not the EPA integrated energy factor. My exact-string query of the active EPA dataset returned an empty list, so I do not claim a current E050 certification, current IEF or ENERGY STAR status. The 50-pint rating is not an independent test or a guarantee of water removed in your home.

Decide where condensate will go

The E050 has no collection bucket; the manual describes water leaving through a drain tube to a floor drain or condensate pump. Its ordinary no-extra-pump setup is a level cabinet with a continuously downward-sloping line to a suitable lower outlet. AprilAire warns that flexible tubing must not curl upward, which can create an air lock. This makes the model a poor fit if the only available drain is above the cabinet and you want a self-contained appliance to lift water.

A separate AprilAire Model 4856 condensate pump is an installation accessory; the manual gives that accessory a 22-foot lift. That does not turn the E050 itself into a built-in-pump model. The installer must select, position and wire the separate pump and its overflow switch. If you specifically want an integrated pump with a self-contained configuration, compare a portable pump dehumidifier instead. If a downhill waste route already exists, the E050’s continuous-drain design avoids tank emptying, but the drain still needs maintenance.

Installation and care are part of the purchase

The supplied box contents include a washable MERV 8 filter, 10 feet of 3/4-inch inside-diameter drain tubing, a barbed fitting and leveling feet. The specification sheet calls for a 120-volt, 4.2-amp supply and rates sound at 54 dBA when ducted and 57 dBA un-ducted. Those are manufacturer values, not a promise of room noise after installation. The filter slides out at the end of the cabinet; the manual also describes cleaning the drain pan and checking the tubing for buildup. Plan access to the filter and drain instead of burying the unit behind finished work.

AprilAire specifies dehumidification inlet conditions from 50°F to 104°F with a 40°F minimum dew point. Its manual says install indoors, keep it out of standing water and avoid pool applications; the refrigerant is R32, which the manual treats as flammable. Installation and service are recommended for a trained technician and must follow local code. This is not a device for solving window condensation by itself in winter.

Who should choose E050?

Consider the E050 when the 50-pint class and compact footprint suit a smaller or hard-to-reach installation, you can provide a lower drain, and you want an onboard local control without paying for a Wi-Fi model. The exact non-W page describes a built-in digital interface; unlike the separately listed E050W, it does not advertise Wi-Fi or app control. If remote app monitoring is essential, that suffix difference matters. If you need a larger rating, compare the 70- and 80-pint AprilAire models rather than assuming a small-space label defines your load.

There is also a warranty detail worth resolving before ordering: the current E050 product page advertises five years of full replacement plus one year of parts, while the model manual and Form 1008 state five years. Ask the Healthy Air Professional for the written terms applying to the exact E050 and installation. AprilAire routes buyers through its professional network; no direct shop price is displayed. The value here is the compact fixed-system design—not a verified lifetime cost, a universal square-foot fit or a no-install setup.
