AprilAire E050W Wi-Fi Whole-Home Dehumidifier review

A fixed, low-profile 50-pint-class Wi-Fi dehumidifier for a planned crawl-space, small-basement or ducted installation. It adds Healthy Air app control to the E050 capacity class but has no collection tank or built-in pump; plan a continuous drain to a lower outlet.

A useful fit for

For a hard-to-reach residential space where app monitoring is useful, the 50-pint class fits the planned moisture load, and a lower gravity-drain route is available. It is stationary and not an integrated-pump appliance.

The main tradeoff

Wi-Fi and app monitoring distinguish E050W, but do not change its 50-pint rating class or create a built-in pump. Verify the wider 12-inch control-inclusive envelope and current warranty terms; exact current EPA certification/IEF were not confirmed.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

What does the E050W 50-pint capacity rating represent?

Form 1033 lists 50 pints/day at 80°F/60% RH, 42 at 73°F/60% RH and 35 at 65°F/60% RH. The exact sheet ties the rated capacity to 0.0 in. w.c. external static pressure; lower temperatures and added duct resistance change the comparison.

Does E050W add phone-app control over the standard E050?

Yes. The exact E050W page and specification sheet identify Wi-Fi and the Healthy Air app; the W-family manual names E050W and describes setup. Home-network pairing success, required router details and cloud-service lifetime are not guaranteed.

Explore this need in the finder →
Can I install E050W without a bucket using a lower gravity drain?

Yes. The E050W page and exact Form 1033 sheet list drain tubing and drainage to a common floor or waste outlet. It has no collection bucket or built-in lift pump; the ordinary plan is continuous gravity drainage to a suitable lower outlet.

Does the exact E050W query establish a current ENERGY STAR IEF?

No. The exact E050W string query of EPA’s current active dataset returned an empty list. Its W-family manual cover carries a dated Most Efficient 2025 mark, but current exact certification, EPA IEF and connected-capability remain unconfirmed. The manufacturer energy factors are not EPA IEF values.

The AprilAire E050W is the Wi-Fi version of AprilAire’s compact 50-pint E050 dehumidifier. It is a fixed, ductable or dedicated-space appliance for a crawl space, small basement or another planned area—not a portable unit with a tank. Its practical distinction is app-connected monitoring and control; the W suffix does not add a built-in water pump.

This assessment uses AprilAire’s exact U.S. E050W page, the model-specific manufacturer-authored specification sheet, Form 1033 (09.25), and the manufacturer-authored W-family installation and owner manual 10021212, which names E050W. The manual copy is hosted by a distributor. I also queried EPA’s active dehumidifier dataset for the exact E050W model string.

The exact product page links the inspected E050W image. It shows a low-profile cabinet, end filter grille, side control and antenna. The antenna is visible in this image, but no picture can establish home-network compatibility or the unit’s capacity. AprilAire does not clarify whether this product image is photography or a rendering.

Same compact capacity class; a different control choice

AprilAire lists the E050W at 50 pints per day for crawl spaces, attics, garages and basements, and markets it for spaces up to 1,600 square feet. The E050W specification sheet gives 50 pints at 80°F/60% RH, 42 at 73°F/60% RH and 35 at 65°F/60% RH. The rated condition footnote is 80°F/60% RH at zero external static pressure. Its airflow values drop from 145 CFM at zero static pressure to 125 at 0.2 and 105 at 0.4 inches water column. That is a more useful starting point for an installer than treating 50 pints as a room guarantee.

The sheet’s manufacturer energy factors are 2.0, 1.8 and 1.7 L/kWh at those respective conditions. They are not EPA IEF values. My exact E050W query of EPA’s current active dataset returned no row. The 2025 W-family manual cover carries a Most Efficient 2025 mark, but that dated mark does not establish a current exact EPA listing, current IEF or connected-capability record. If certification is an essential buying requirement, ask for the exact record instead of inferring it from a family mark.

Wi-Fi is the reason to choose the W model

The exact E050W page and specification sheet identify integrated Wi-Fi, while the product page describes Bluetooth pairing and the AprilAire Healthy Air app for monitoring and control. The manufacturer describes alerts, diagnostics and updates. That can be useful when the unit is installed in a crawl space or another location that is inconvenient to visit. It is materially different from the non-W E050’s local digital control.

Connectivity is not the same as guaranteed remote reliability. The sources do not specify every router-band requirement, household pairing outcome, phone/app version, cloud-service lifespan or response time. If an app is not useful to you, the standard E050 is a straightforward comparison with similar rated capacity and dimensions. Do not interpret E050W Wi-Fi as an EPA Connected Capable designation; that exact EPA result remains unknown.

Plan a fixed drain, not an uphill route from the cabinet

The E050W is supplied with a 10-foot, 3/4-inch-ID drain tube and barbed fitting. Its sheet describes moisture draining to a common floor or waste drain. The unit has no collection bucket and no built-in lift pump, so the basic plan is a continuous gravity route to an appropriate lower outlet. A separate Model 4856 condensate pump is an optional accessory listed on the exact E050W technical sheet, with a stated 22-foot lift; it is not part of the appliance or its built-in pump capability.

Pay attention to which instructions are model-specific. Manual 10021212 includes a drain-insert warning for E080W and E100W, and explicitly says that insert applies only to those two models. I do not transfer that E080W/E100W warning to E050W. Use the E050W drain connection, slope and fittings specified by its own documents, and have the installer verify the route, overflow protection and service access.

Check envelope, air path and warranty before placement

The E050W is listed at 46 pounds. Form 1033 gives cabinet-only dimensions of 12 inches wide, 10 high and 25 long, with the user interface included in the width and adjustable feet excluded from height. The current product page separately lists nominal 10 × 12 × 25 inches and actual 9.86 × 9.71 × 25 inches. Because those width descriptions are not a single unambiguous clearance envelope, use the wider 12-inch figure for an initial space check and confirm the installation drawing and access clearances with the installer. Do not order on the assumption that a stated actual width includes the full control projection.

The washable MERV 8 filter is accessible at the cabinet end; the sheet lists 54 dBA ducted and 57 dBA un-ducted, 120 volts, 4.2 amps, R32 refrigerant and 50°F–104°F inlet-air operation with a minimum 40°F dew point. Eight-inch duct collars are optional, not supplied. A loose-air crawl-space installation, optional collars and whole-home ducting are different designs, and the 0.4-inch maximum static-pressure rating matters if ducts are added. The manual advises trained installation, indoor use and code compliance; it warns against use in pool applications. Keep filter and drain access open after installation.

Warranty text also differs by document: the current shop page says five years of full replacement plus one year of parts, while Form 1033 says five years. Confirm the written terms for your exact purchase. The product is offered through AprilAire’s Healthy Air Professional network, not a displayed direct price.

Who benefits from E050W?

Choose E050W when a compact, permanently installed 50-pint class unit meets the planned load, a gravity-drain route is practical, and app monitoring is valuable in a hard-to-reach space. Choose standard E050 if you prefer the non-W control or have no use for Wi-Fi; choose an E070/E080 or larger model only after comparing the different capacity and duct requirements for your space. If the drain must rise, the optional accessory is a separate pump and installation decision—someone needing a self-contained built-in pump should compare a different configuration. Either way, the professional installation plan matters more than the square-foot headline.
