A useful fit for

For an existing ADEW20LY owner checking its compact 20-pint cabinet, drainage or maintenance plan. It is discontinued and not a recommendation to buy old stock.

The main tradeoff

The shorter 19.5-inch cabinet shares the 20-pint rating, 6.8-pint bucket and 30.9-pound net weight of ADEL20LY, but GE lists a lower 1.4 L/kWh IEF and different sound, airflow and timer values. It documents gravity drainage only.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does ADEW20LY fit a shorter space than the other discontinued GE 20-pint model?

GE lists ADEW20LY at 19.5 inches high; ADEL20LY is 24 inches high. Measure the room around the cabinet too—the manual calls for 18 inches of airflow clearance. ADEW20LY itself is discontinued.

What does a 1.4 L/kWh published IEF mean for ADEW20LY?

It is the exact manufacturer-listed integrated energy factor, not a measured monthly bill. A minimum above 1.4 should reject the model on the published field; discontinued status excludes it from current purchase matching regardless.

Can ADEW20LY pump condensate up to an elevated outlet?

Its exact manual describes the installed bucket or a garden hose sloping to a floor drain. It does not establish a pump-lift route or bucketless operation.

ADEW20LY is a discontinued GE 20-pint/day portable dehumidifier. Its most useful distinction from the similarly rated ADEL20LY is not capacity: both are listed at 20 pints per day with a 6.8-pint bucket and 30.9-pound dry weight. ADEW20LY is shorter and shallower, while its listed integrated energy factor is lower. This page is for exact-model identification and existing owners, not a new-purchase recommendation.

The assessment follows GE’s exact ADEW20LY product page, its owner-support record, the linked 49-5000397 manual and GE’s comparison of ADEW20LY, ADEL20LY and ADHL22LA. GE dates manufacture from June 2019 through August 2023 and says this model is no longer being manufactured.

GE’s exact-model image shows the white ADEW20LY front, top controls and water-level window. The official image is a compact, straight-sided cabinet view; GE does not identify photograph-versus-render status.

Same 20-pint class, shorter cabinet

GE publishes a 20-pint/day removal rating and a 6.8-pint front-removable bucket. The latter is less than one gallon, so bucket-only operation means paying attention to the full-water indicator and emptying interval. How often that happens depends on the room and conditions; the capacity rating should not be read as an expected daily bucket fill.

The model is 19.5 inches high, 13.5 inches wide and 10 inches deep, with a listed 30.9-pound dry weight. GE’s comparison shows easy-roll casters, and the top discharge differs from ADEL20LY’s top-rear outlet. These dimensions make ADEW20LY the shorter shape of the two old 20-pint models, but the manual still calls for at least 18 inches of clearance around it and a level, sturdy floor. It is designed for indoor residential use between 41°F and 90°F, not for an enclosed cabinet or a cold unheated space below that range.

A lower gravity outlet is the only documented hose route

GE’s 49-5000397 manual describes bucket collection and a garden-hose drain to a floor drain. The hose is not supplied. After removing the bucket to attach it, the instructions say to replace the bucket and keep it securely seated; the appliance will not operate with the bucket missing. Route the hose downhill and avoid treating this connection as an upward lift. The manual describes only two ways to remove collected water for this product family and does not provide a pump mode or a bucketless setup for ADEW20LY.

That distinction is more important than the phrase “continuous drain.” If your outlet is below the appliance and a gravity path is possible, the hose can reduce bucket-emptying chores. If the drain is elevated, or if you require the machine to run with no bucket installed, select a configuration whose exact manual describes that plan. Do not substitute a later GE family’s instructions or assume a portable pump is built in.

Published energy and noise values are not a household bill

GE lists 420 watts, 3.7 amps at 115 volts and an integrated energy factor of 1.4 L/kWh. It reports 48 dBA at low fan and 52 dBA at maximum, with three fan speeds. This is a conventional compressor dehumidifier profile with automatic defrost and a washable permanent-mesh slide-out filter. The 2- and 4-hour off timer can shorten a set operating period; the exact specifications also list automatic restart, a bucket-full alarm and a filter reminder.

Compare the IEF as a labeled efficiency measure rather than a prediction of annual cost. Humidity, temperature, target setting and runtime influence consumption and collection, and the GE page’s 500-square-foot area field is not a substitute for sizing the actual moisture load. The specification lists a 1-year replacement parts warranty, but discontinued status and secondhand condition mean remaining coverage or repair-part availability should not be assumed.

Why the suffix matters

ADEW20LY and ADEL20LY share their nominal daily rating, bucket volume and dry weight, but the measured footprint and published figures differ. ADEL20LY stands 24 inches high and is 14.75 inches wide; ADEW20LY is 19.5 by 13.5 inches. ADEW20LY’s reported IEF is 1.4 L/kWh, compared with ADEL20LY’s 2.0. Its low/high noise values are 48/52 dBA rather than 47/51 dBA. That is enough to make the exact suffix important for identification, clearance and comparisons. It is not enough to claim that one will necessarily use a particular amount of electricity in your home.

ADHL22LA is another distinct GE model, not a refreshed ADEW suffix: it has a 22-pint rating, an 8.5-pint bucket and a Smart Dry fan setting. Its controls and 24-hour timer differ from this ADEW’s listed two- and four-hour off timer. Smart Dry is a humidity-responsive fan mode, not evidence of app control.

Owner reference, not a shortlist entry

For an existing owner, check the back label for the complete ADEW20LY code before following instructions or looking for parts. The manual calls for the washable filter to be checked at least every 250 operating hours, and for periodic bucket cleaning. If the bucket is removed, the unit stops; the gravity hose only works with a proper downhill route and the bucket reseated.

For a new purchase, use the exact capacity, drain and handling questions on current models instead. ADEW20LY’s smaller body than ADEL20LY is useful for distinguishing it, but the model is discontinued and excluded from new-buy results. Neither the published 20-pint rating nor the room-area figure guarantees that the appliance will manage your room.
