LG PuriCare 50-Pint Dehumidifier review

A discontinued black LG PuriCare dehumidifier labeled at 50 pints/day using LG’s pre-June 2019 rating procedure. It has a 13.3-pint fitted tank, washable filter, two fan speeds and a lower gravity-drain option, but no pump is listed in its exact-model documents.

A useful fit for

For an existing UD501KOG5 owner or exact used-model identification when fitted-bucket collection or a lower gravity drain is suitable. The published 50-pint class is the historic DOE-procedure label, not a guarantee of room output.

The main tradeoff

No built-in lift pump or app connection is documented. The tank is 13.3 pints, gravity drainage uses an external garden hose and requires the bucket reseated, and the 50-pint test condition is the older 80°F procedure.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does the KOG5 meet a 50-pint class comparison, with its older test footnote kept in view?

LG lists 50 pints/day under its pre-June 13, 2019 test procedure at 80°F. This is a historical class label and is not directly comparable to later 65°F-procedure figures.

The LG UD501KOG5 is a discontinued, black PuriCare dehumidifier that LG labeled at 50 pints per day under an older test procedure. It is useful as an exact-model reference for an existing owner or a used listing, not as a current new-buy recommendation. Its appeal is straightforward: a washable-filter, two-speed cabinet with a 13.3-pint bucket and a lower gravity-drain option. It does not have a documented lift pump or app connection.

This assessment uses LG’s UD501KOG5 U.S. product page, model-specific U.S. support record, the UD501KOG5 specification sheet, and the MFL63261234 owner’s manual. LG marks the product discontinued. No laboratory result, owner experience, present stock claim or current purchase offer is asserted here.

Read the 50-pint rating in its original test context

LG’s product page calls this a 50-pint model, and its 2019 specification sheet gives a 50-pint-per-day rating and IEF of 1.80 L/kWh. The sheet explains that the rating followed the pre-June 13, 2019 DOE procedure, when pint-removal performance was measured at 80°F; the later procedure moved to 65°F. That means “50 pints” is the correct historical class label, but it is not a like-for-like measurement against a newer appliance tested under the changed procedure. Nor is it a promise that a real basement will yield 50 pints each day. Actual extraction varies with temperature, humidity, air movement and moisture source.

The exact page and spec identify the product as ENERGY STAR qualified. The sheet lists 115 volts/60 Hz, 545 watts and 5 amps; it also gives two fan speeds and a 10-amp circuit size. These are useful identity and installation facts, not evidence that an older unit remains efficient or safe after years of use. When evaluating an installed appliance, check its nameplate, cord, filter, tank, drain connector and service history rather than assuming a model-page value guarantees its present condition.

A fitted bucket remains part of either documented route

The removable, side-loading bucket holds 13.3 pints. It is much smaller than the unit’s rated daily removal class, so the full-bucket indicator and automatic shutoff matter: when the tank fills, the unit stops dehumidifying until it is emptied and reseated. The tank is manageable for a planned emptying routine, but it is not an unattended continuous-water solution when no lower drain is available.

For hands-off removal, the manual’s continuous-drain procedure uses an external adapter and a 3/4-inch-outer-diameter threaded garden hose. It instructs the owner to remove the bucket during connection, then put it back in place. Place the hose in a nearby sink or drain, secure it so it cannot slip out, and route it continuously downhill; the manual does not publish a maximum total hose length. The specified hose is an item needed for setup, not identified as an included accessory. A gravity fitting is not a pump: if the receiving drain is above the machine, this configuration does not meet that need. The reviewed manual does not establish bucketless operation, so do not assume the unit will run with its tank removed.

Controls and maintenance are conventional, not connected

The front display reports humidity in five-point increments and the setpoint can be adjusted from 30% to 80% RH in five-point steps. The exact sheet lists two fan speeds, a timer and automatic humidistat control. There is no Wi-Fi or app feature in the reviewed exact-model product, support, manual or specification material; a connected-home requirement should therefore be treated as unmet, not inferred from a generic LG marketing page.

The manual gives an operating range of 41°F to 90°F and automatic defrost. It warns that low temperature or humidity reduces dehumidification; a low-temperature rating does not mean the unit maintains the same capacity in cold air. It asks for roughly 12 inches of clearance around the cabinet. The check-filter indicator lights after 350 operating hours, and the washable filter should be checked and cleaned; the manual’s care section says clean it about monthly and let it dry completely before reinstalling. The bucket should also be emptied and cleaned periodically. After 23 continuous hours, the safety-standby period pauses fan and compressor operation for one hour before restart. That routine interruption should be considered if someone expects constant uninterrupted running.

Who should use this record

For an existing UD501KOG5 owner, this is a relatively simple 50-pint-class reference if the water can collect in the tank or flow by gravity to a lower outlet. The black finish, removable tank, washable filter and locally adjustable humidity are documented. For a used listing, confirm the full suffix: a close-looking LG product can add a pump or Wi-Fi and is not the same configuration. In particular, the UD501KOJ5 adds a built-in pump and ThinQ Wi-Fi, while this KOG5 does not document either feature.

For a new dehumidifier search, use a current exact model whose manual states its drainage route, performance test conditions and replacement-filter availability. The KOG5’s 50-pint label is an older-condition value, its bucket still requires attention, and it cannot lift water to an elevated drain. This page helps identify and operate the exact discontinued model; it does not imply current availability or recommend buying an unverified used appliance.
