Whirlpool WHAD drain routes and fit

WhirlpoolHomeComfort's current consumer catalog shows four portable models: 23-pint WHAD201DW, 30-pint WHAD301DW, 50-pint WHAD501DW and 50-pint pump WHAD50PDW. The first three ratings separate capacity classes; the last code changes where the water can go. Start by measuring your drain route, then check the exact model number and the size data that are actually supported.

Pick a route before a room-area headline

All four exact listings describe bucket collection and a drain to a lower outlet. The three non-pump codes have no built-in pump, and their shared manual limits the standard garden hose to six feet while requiring a downward route. WHAD50PDW adds lift: its manual allows up to 16 feet of vertical rise and a 50-foot total pump-hose run. Those are separate measurements. Its gravity option is limited to a 16-foot hose. The ordinary gravity hose is not included; the pump guide depicts an included kit but does not state its exact hose length.

None of the four exact manuals reviewed documents bucketless operation. The drain fitting is not proof that a unit can operate with the tank removed. A bucket route will eventually pause on a full-tank alert and automatic shutoff. For a hard bucketless need, look for an exact manual that describes the tank-free procedure.

Read the official numbers with care

The shared manufacturer spec table lists 23/30/50/50 pints per day; 235/316/520/520 watts; 29.9/31.9/42/42.7 pounds; and the exact cabinet dimensions. It lists 14 pints for each bucket, while the individual pages say 8.5 pints for WHAD201DW and WHAD301DW and 14.8 for the 50-pint models. It also disagrees with the pages on room area: model pages say 250, 400 and 650 square feet, whereas the family table gives 1,500, 3,000 and 4,500. Use the product class and measured fit, not these conflicting bucket or square-foot numbers, to screen candidates.

There is another mismatch: product pages say three fan speeds, while the exact manuals and family table describe two manual settings, High and Low. The family table prints sound values but does not name a unit, so they cannot be compared as dB or dB(A). For a strict third-speed or acoustic requirement, seek confirmation from XLS Products rather than treating an ambiguous product image or table as proof.

Setup and ownership checklist

  • All four use a 115V grounded three-prong connection; their shared manual prohibits adapters and extension cords and calls for a 15A time-delay fuse or circuit breaker.
  • The listed lower temperature limit is 41°F, with a 95°F upper limit. This is an operating boundary, not a guarantee of rated removal at those extremes.
  • The manuals describe humidity set points from 35% through 80%, a 24-hour timer, child lock, auto restart and automatic defrost.
  • The reusable filter reminder appears after about 250 hours. Rinse as instructed, dry it fully, and keep the grille clear.
  • R32 instructions require clear ventilation openings, caution against ignition sources near the unit and reserve refrigerant-circuit service for qualified personnel. Two people should move/install the appliance.

Who each current code is for

WHAD201DW is the compact 23-pint listing; WHAD301DW adds a 30-pint rating in the same listed width/depth/height and with about two pounds more dry weight. WHAD501DW moves to a 50-pint class and a taller 42-pound chassis, still with no pump. Choose WHAD50PDW when a higher discharge is essential and your measured route stays within both manual limits. If the route is downhill, a pump may be unnecessary. If your humidity load requires a rating above 50 pints/day, this four-item lineup does not provide one.

The product pages and shared specification sheet call these models E-Star/ENERGY STAR, but the active EPA dataset query checked for this review returned newer Whirlpool codes rather than WHAD201DW, WHAD301DW, WHAD501DW or WHAD50PDW. That is not enough to assert current exact certification either way; verify the exact model number in EPA's live finder if the label is required. WhirlpoolHomeComfort states XLS Products manufactures the line under license. Its Buy Now links lead to a general retailer list, not a SKU-specific stock confirmation. Search by the complete model code and check the carton or nameplate instead of matching only a white 50-pint cabinet photo.
