Comparison
Older GE 20- and 22-pint models: exact suffixes matter
Three older GE portable models share a family resemblance, but the exact suffix changes cabinet size, bucket volume, reported efficiency and controls. Use this comparison to identify an existing appliance and understand its published water routes. All three have been discontinued; these are owner-reference models, not recommendations to buy old stock.
The comparison follows GE’s official three-model comparison, the exact model pages and linked manuals for ADEW20LY, ADEL20LY and ADHL22LA. Specifications below are manufacturer-listed, not independent test results.
Start with the suffix, not the shared 20-pint label
ADEW20LY and ADEL20LY are both listed at 20 pints per day, with 6.8-pint buckets and 30.9-pound net weights. ADEW20LY is 19.5 inches high by 13.5 wide by 10 deep; ADEL20LY is 24 high by 14.75 wide by 11.375 deep. The taller ADEL has hidden wheels and a pocket handle, while GE lists easy-roll casters for ADEW. Those differences matter when the unit has to fit under a shelf, pass a doorway or move across a basement floor. Measure the complete cabinet and leave the manual-required airflow clearance; the published body dimensions are not its full installation envelope.
The two specifications also show different energy and sound values. ADEL20LY is listed at 2.0 L/kWh IEF and 47/51 dBA at low/maximum fan; ADEW20LY is listed at 1.4 L/kWh and 48/52 dBA. Both are 115-volt, three-speed models, but ADEL lists 440 watts and ADEW 420 watts. An IEF is a standardized manufacturer rating, not an estimate of what a particular room will cost to dry. Do not rank these old units by one line alone.
ADHL22LA changes the controls and tank
ADHL22LA is the 22-pint entry. GE lists an 8.5-pint bucket, a 36-pound dry weight, a 19.5-by-13.5-by-10-inch body, three fan speeds and a 24-hour on/off timer. Its Smart Dry setting adjusts fan speed based on room humidity, while the exact page lists a 1.57 L/kWh IEF and 45/48.5-dBA low/maximum values. This is not simply ADEW20LY with a different badge: it has a higher published rating, a larger bucket and a different control scheme. Smart Dry is not evidence of Wi-Fi or phone control.
Capacity is a published rating, not daily removal guaranteed in a particular room. The room-area lines on GE’s pages are similarly not a promise for connected or unusually damp spaces. A two-pint capacity difference should not outweigh the actual moisture load, the temperature range, where the water goes, and whether the unit will fit with its required clearances.
Two older 20-pint manuals say bucket or gravity hose
The ADEL20 and ADEW20 manuals describe bucket collection or a garden hose to a floor drain. The hose is not supplied; the instructions require the bucket to be put back and remain seated. That is a downhill gravity arrangement, not an upward pump, and neither guide establishes bucketless operation. The unit stops if its bucket is missing or full. GE’s manuals recommend an indoor, level location, 18 inches of air space around the cabinet and operation from 41°F to 90°F. The washable filter should be checked at least every 250 hours and the bucket cleaned periodically.
ADHL’s family manual also documents a garden-hose route with the bucket fitted. It mentions a pump for some models, but GE’s exact ADHL22LA spec page does not identify a pump or its rise limit. Do not count this exact model for an essential pump-lift setup unless its own label/manual establishes that capability. If the outlet is higher than the appliance, select a different model with a documented pump and check both lift and hose distance.
What to do with the discontinued status
GE’s support records list ADEL20LY as manufactured June 2019–August 2022, ADEW20LY through August 2023, and ADHL22LA from March 2021–November 2024. Each exact product page says the model is no longer being manufactured. Keep the codes separate when matching manuals, replacement buckets or repair parts. Do not assume that used stock has current app access, warranty coverage or service parts just because an old listing remains online.
For a current purchase, use the finder’s capacity and drainage choices against models with current support. A lower gravity outlet, an elevated sink and a requirement to run without a bucket are different needs. If a fact such as a pump limit, Wi-Fi or certification is not established for a particular suffix, treat it as unknown instead of transferring it from a sibling. See the separate ADEW20LY, ADEL20LY and ADHL22LA owner assessments for their exact details.
