Water routes and comparisons

GE 50-pint pump routes: buckets, lift and suffixes

A built-in pump does not necessarily mean a dehumidifier can run without its collection bucket. GE’s earlier APEL50LZ, APEW50LZ and APER50LZ all require a fitted bucket during pump use, while the Midea Cube MAD50PS1QWT manual separately documents bucketless gravity drainage. These are owner and configuration references, not present new-purchase recommendations.

Separate the three water paths

Before comparing pint ratings, identify the route water can actually take from the appliance. Bucket collection means the fitted tank eventually needs emptying. Gravity drainage requires a continuous downhill path to a lower outlet. Pump drainage can reach a higher point, but the exact maximum rise, hose requirements and bucket rules belong to the particular model manual. Treat bucketless operation as a separate question: it must be explicitly documented for the exact unit and for a particular route.

APER50LZ: 16-foot lift, with the bucket in place

GE’s exact APER50LZ review covers a 50-pint/day discontinued model. The page-linked GE manual states that the included pump hose supports up to 16 feet of vertical lift. It also says the pump waits until the 15-pint bucket fills, then empties the tank; the bucket must remain properly seated. Its separate gravity option uses a garden hose that is not supplied and also requires the bucket installed. The manual does not document bucketless operation. Measure the vertical rise and the whole hose route, and leave room to inspect the bucket and pump hose.

The earlier GE APEL45LY is rated at 45 pints/day and also has a documented 16-foot pump limit with the bucket fitted. App status remains unconfirmed for that suffix and for APER50LZ: the hidden SmartHQ page block is generic, not model-specific evidence. Do not infer that an APER50LZ still connects to a currently available service.

The related earlier APEL50LZ and APEW50LZ use the same 49-5000427 Rev. 1 family manual for their 16-foot pump route and seated-bucket requirement. Their exact product pages both list 50 pints/day and a 15-pint tank, but GE lists 770 W for APEL50LZ and 860 W for APEW50LZ; the pages do not explain the difference. Support records end manufacture in May 2022 and May 2025 respectively. Do not transfer one suffix’s ratings or lifecycle to another.

Both exact pages show generic SmartHQ material in hidden page markup, but their model-specific tables and the shared manual do not establish Wi-Fi setup. The product-page RH copy also conflicts with the manual’s 35–80% setting range. Treat app control and exact humidity endpoints as unknown rather than hard-match features.

Cube pump and Cube gravity are not the same setup

Midea’s exact MAD50PS1QWT review describes the 50-pint Cube pump model. Its 2024 manual gives a maximum 14-foot rise above the drain port and requires the bucket to support the pump. The same manual describes a separate bucketless gravity method: remove the bucket, route the hose downhill, and enable the documented mode. Do not combine that tank-free gravity procedure with the pump instructions or assume the bucket rules apply identically to another Cube suffix.

Plan the installation before selecting an older unit

  • Measure vertical rise from the appliance to the water outlet; separately check the complete hose run, slope, bends and discharge location.
  • Decide whether you can leave a bucket fitted. On both pump plans above, it is required even though a hose carries water away.
  • If avoiding a bucket is essential, use only an exact model whose manual documents a bucketless plan—and check whether it is gravity-only.
  • For a used appliance, verify the complete model suffix and inspect the actual tank, pump controls, hose, filter, electrical lead and general condition. Published specifications do not establish a used unit’s current performance.

GE marks APER50LZ as no longer manufactured, and the Midea review distinguishes its exact pump suffixes from the no-pump and alternative pump versions. Use these comparisons to identify a route and understand an installed machine; choose a currently sold dehumidifier only after checking its own manual and availability.
