Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can this earlier 40-class GE meet a 35-pint rating minimum with a downhill hose?
The exact specification row says 42 pints/day and the manual documents a hose to a floor drain; the 10.5-pint bucket is the smallest in this trio.
Explore this need in the finder →Will the AHW40LL fit under a 20-inch cabinet-height limit?
GE lists a 19 23/32-inch body height. Leave the manual’s 12–18-inch air space around it and room to access the bucket.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I rely on this exact model for a 12-foot upward pump lift?
No pump-lift route is established by the exact manual; it documents a bucket and a hose to a floor drain. Treat upward pumping as unsupported.
Explore this need in the finder →The discontinued GE AHW40LL is the compact member of this older AHW group. GE’s exact product page calls it a GE Dehumidifier and lists 42 pints per day, a 10.5-pint bucket and a 500-watt draw. The “40” in the model family name and the current specification row are not identical; this assessment reports the manufacturer’s posted figure rather than silently rounding it.
Model identity and retirement status are supported by GE’s AHW40LL product page and its exact-model support page. That support record links the shared 49-7589 owner manual, which names the AHW40 family.
GE’s exact AHW40LL page links the archived white cabinet image used here. The same image bytes are also linked by its larger AHW siblings, so the exterior is useful for identifying the family but does not distinguish capacity. GE does not state whether it is a photograph or a rendering.
A smaller cabinet and a smaller reservoir
GE’s specification table lists 42 pints per day, 10.5 pints of bucket capacity, 500 watts and 150/95 CFM high/low airflow. Its cabinet measures 19 23/32 inches high, 13 13/32 inches wide and 10 inches deep. The shorter body may be easier to place than the AHW50LL and AHW65LM, but the manufacturer does not publish a net weight in the exact page material reviewed here. Do not assume that its weight or carrying effort follows from the smaller dimensions.
Capacity is a laboratory rating, not a guarantee that your room will yield that much water each day. Temperature, starting humidity, air exchange and the source of moisture all matter. The exact page’s 42-pint specification should be read alongside the AHW40LL model name and older manual family, not turned into a claim about a measured basement. If water is entering through a leak or seepage, address the water source rather than expecting a portable dehumidifier to fix it.
The 10.5-pint collection bucket is roughly one quarter of the daily rating. In a damp room the tank can therefore interrupt operation before a day has passed. Its full-bucket control shuts the unit down; the alarm is not an overflow drain or a substitute for emptying it. Check the tank and allow enough front space to remove it.
Bucket or downhill hose—no documented pump lift
The 49-7589 manual describes two water routes: collect water in the bucket, or attach a garden hose and lead it down to a floor drain. The hose is not included. For gravity drainage, GE instructs the owner to remove the bucket to fit the hose and then put the bucket back; the unit needs the tank seated to operate. That means the hose route is not bucketless. Keep it continuously downhill and free of kinks, and do not plan a vertical rise as though the AHW40LL had a pump. A drain above the appliance is outside the manual’s documented setup.
If your intended installation requires pumping uphill, a current reviewed pump-equipped alternative such as the Midea MAD50PS1QWT-A has a separate pump plan to evaluate. If the room has a lower floor drain, the gravity hose may be sufficient and a pump is not necessary. Choose based on the actual route, not just the capacity line.
Controls and recurring care
The owner manual documents High, Medium and Low fan settings, an adjustable humidity target from 35% to 80% RH in five-point increments, and a Continuous setting. The display reports room humidity with a stated ±5% accuracy. A two- or four-hour delay-off timer, automatic defrost, full-bucket shutoff and restart using the last settings after an interruption are also documented. These are straightforward local controls; the exact manual and specification do not establish app control for this suffix.
GE’s manual says the washable filter reminder appears after 250 operating hours. Inspect and clean the filter at that interval or sooner if needed, and clean the bucket every few weeks as instructed. The manual calls for indoor residential use, an enclosed room, and air space around the cabinet; its wording gives a 12–18-inch clearance range, so follow its placement diagrams rather than treating cabinet dimensions as the whole footprint. It also warns that performance falls below 41°F as coils can frost. A defrost feature does not make this the right appliance for a colder space.
Who should keep this reference
AHW40LL is useful for an existing owner, someone identifying a precise model on a seller listing, or a household checking the controls and drain procedure before moving the appliance. It combines the smallest body in this trio with the smallest bucket and the lowest listed wattage; its manual does not establish an uphill-pump setup. GE’s support page dates manufacture from April 2008 through December 2021 and the product page says the model is no longer manufactured. Availability, condition, remaining warranty and parts should be verified with the seller, not inferred from an old product page.
When the finder includes earlier models, a gravity-drain answer can keep this record visible for comparison, but a required pump lift or bucketless setup rejects it. For a new purchase, compare current exact models such as Frigidaire FHDD2234W1 or Midea MAD35S1AWWT against your room, route and weight constraints. They are alternatives with their own manuals, not equivalent versions of AHW40LL.
Key details at a glance
| Published daily removal rating | 42 pt/day |
|---|---|
| ENERGY STAR certified | Yes |
| Published dimensions | 19 23/32 in H × 13 13/32 in W × 10 in D |
| Bucketless operating mode | No |
| Controls and settings | Local electronic controls offer High/Medium/Low, 35–80% RH in 5-point steps or continuous operation, an approximate humidity display (manual states ±5%), a 2- or 4-hour delay-off timer, automatic defrost, bucket-full shutdown and a 250-hour washable-filter reminder. |
| Water-removal setup | The exact owner manual documents bucket collection or a garden hose leading to a floor drain; the hose is not included. It directs the owner to reseat the bucket and says the bucket must remain securely seated for operation. The manual does not establish pump lift, pump hose inclusion or bucketless running; those unknowns cannot satisfy a pump requirement. |
| Care and operating limits | GE’s linked manual identifies indoor residential use, a smooth level floor, at least 12–18 inches of air space, operation above 41°F, bucket cleaning every few weeks and filter cleaning at 250 operating hours or sooner if needed. |
