AprilAire E050, E050W and larger E-series choices

The first choice is often not a pint number: AprilAire’s compact E050 and E050W sit in the 50-pint class, but only the W configuration advertises app control. Moving to an E080, E080W or E100W changes the capacity class and installation envelope. All are fixed systems that need a planned air path and condensate route.

Start with what the 50-pint pair shares

The exact E050 and E050W pages both describe a low-profile 50-pint dehumidifier for crawl spaces, small basements and other hard-to-reach areas. Their model-specific specifications list 50 pints per day at 80°F/60% RH, with lower figures at cooler test points. Both are about 46 pounds and require permanent drainage rather than a portable collection bucket. AprilAire advertises use in spaces up to 1,600 square feet; that is manufacturer application guidance, not a sizing guarantee. Duct resistance, temperature, humidity and the moisture load still matter.

The non-W E050 review is the simpler control choice: its exact page describes a built-in digital interface, but does not advertise Wi-Fi or app control. The E050W review covers the Wi-Fi model; its page and specification sheet describe Bluetooth pairing, Healthy Air app control, alerts and diagnostics. The app may be useful when the unit sits in an inaccessible crawl space. It does not change the core gravity-drain requirement or add an integral pump.

Separate gravity drainage from pump capability

For both E050 versions, plan a continuous downhill route to a suitable floor or waste drain. The E050 owner manual calls for a constant downward slope and warns that flexible tubing can air-lock if it curls upward. Both exact product families list the Model 4856 as a separate condensate-pump accessory with a 22-foot lift; it is not a built-in pump included in the dehumidifier. Someone with no lower drain should compare a product designed with an integral pump rather than treat the separate accessory as an appliance feature.

When a larger model is worth investigating

The E080 is a different capacity class, not merely the E050 with a larger marketing area. Its manufacturer manual lists 80 pints per day at 80°F/60% RH; a current EPA Appendix X1 record separately lists 65 pints/day. The E080W adds Wi-Fi and app features, while an exact EPA listing was not confirmed for that W suffix. The E100W is a larger 100-pint Wi-Fi model with a heavier cabinet and larger duct connection. Ratings use model-specific test procedures and must not be compared as a promise of field performance.

Before asking for a quote, decide whether app access is genuinely valuable, measure the installation space including feet, filter doors and collar clearance, identify the drain route, and estimate duct static pressure. AprilAire routes current products through Healthy Air Professionals; ask the installer to identify the exact suffix, separate accessories, warranty term and operating plan in writing.

Read the documents for the exact suffix

Suffixes matter. The E050W is not interchangeable with E050; a W label confirms Wi-Fi/app capability, not a pump. The 2025 shared W-family manual’s drain-insert caution is specific to E080W and E100W, not E050W. Likewise, a dated Most Efficient mark in a manual does not substitute for an exact current EPA record. Confirm the exact model-specific sheet and manual whenever certification, dimensions, connected status or warranty is essential.
